house: born out of chicago in the mid to late 80s, it usually has a steady upbeat rhythem but can also be serious and reflective, examples: marshall jefferson-move your body(the house music anthem), happy mondays-step on, joe smooth-promised land, in around 88 `acid house` developed, look up mr lee-pump up london and maurice-this is acid.
rave: mostly an english thing,a `rave` is a coming together of people usually in a field or warehouse in the late 80s/ early 90s, rave music consisted of house, acid house, hardcore and jungle (they all stem from house) what most people consider rave music is upbeat, bouncy and fast, quite often with piano solos or intros look up liquid-sweet harmony, new atlantic-i know, shamen-ebeneezer goode amd candi staton- you got the love. raves have connotations with the drug extasy and are mainly illegal in the uk :( lol
trance: the main trance producers are from britain and germany, trance was developed in around 96/97 and is still made today on a smaller scale, the heyday of trance i would say was 98 to 02 anyway trance had a liquid, `trancy` sound, hense the term, the purpose of it was to be played in clubs and raves so a lot of tunes had long intros and big dramatic drops, the beat is literally `boom, boom, boom` lol and the melodies and lyrics tend to be sweet and dreamy, with mainly feemale vocals look up faithless-god is a dj, underworld-born slippy, tiesto-adagio for strings, delerium-silence ppk-resurrection and bk-revolution.
there is a fine line between trance and techno, i would say techno (also known as hardstyle) is a lot more agressive look up the song `one night in hackney` (i dont know who its by) you are more likely to hear techno in a metal club than a rave nowdays.
house is still made today in many forms such as `funky house` the stuff is very mainstream unlike early house and acid house (still good though), in your college paper you may also want to look into the genres of hip-house, happy hardcore, jungle, drum and bass and dubstep, which are all evolutions of electronic music. `electro` is just a term for all the above genres in my opinion and normally used by people who dont know a lot about it lol good luck on your paper and have fun listening to the music :)
Why do people confuse techno, house, trance, dance and rave?
