Why do people confuse techno, house, trance, dance and rave?

  • When it comes down to it genres are pretty dumb, but sometimes necessary for classification.
    But yeah... let's see.

Trance is four-to-the-floor kick-on-every-beat dance music that is supposed to "transcend" and put you in a mental state. It's characterized by huge buildups/breakdowns (dynamics), pads, "huge" synths etc

Techno is like bips and beeps with a rhythm. Usually hardly dynamic, if at all. (Most electronic music you hear is NOT techno, it's usually trance or house)

House is similar to trance, except instead of being transcending and emotional, it's more down-to-earth, clubby, and groovy. It has less dynamics than trance, but has more hi-hats and usually more swing etc

And if interested, here's a few more:

IDM: IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music, which ironically is hardly danceable. It's basically glitches and bleeps, sometimes lacking a solid rhythm, but very heavy on percussion. Very "electronic" sounding, if I have to bring it to that level.

Ambient: Ambient isn't necessarily completely electronic, but it is often included. It's basically music with no or very little rhythm, aka soundscape or background music. Some ambient is very dark, long, undeveloping, while others can have a slow rhythm, even vocals at times.

Trip-Hop: Trip-hop is basically ambient with a more prominent focus on beats and basslines, and usually has a singer. This music is usually -very slow- compared to other stuff. It's characterized by it's lo-fi effects like purposefully placed record spinning fx and stuff, as well as "seemingly random" samples that fit into place.

Jungle/DnB: Fast, usually dark music that follows a steady bouncing rhythm, made famous by the Amen Break (a drum break recorded from a band a while ago.) It has echoing hihats and such.

There's more but I'm a little tired, but can do more if anyone decides not to google for themselves.
