Why do people choose to steal non food items?

I can understand food if you're poor and hungry. But trying to steal the biggest most expensive 4K TV in the store, tablets, or phones is just ridiculous. Everytime we catch a person doing this at my job they say stuff like "oh its for my [insert family member here]" You don't need these things to survive. So why?

    I piss off with allot of plasic bags at self check out, because A I'm not getting a discount foe doing half the job and B I wanna use them for trash and covering our watermelon

    um because 4k tv's do not expire and foods expires? (some food doesn't).
