Here are my thoughts:
1) They are trying to sell a dress.
2) They don't want to hurt your feelings by being too blunt. Seriously, if you were the salesperson, I can't imagine you'd be brutally honest either.
Or 3) you may actually look nice. You are your own worst critic, right?
I can imagine the frustration you are feeling, though. It's a lot of pressure planning a wedding and being the center of attention. Wedding dresses, specifically, run so small, and it's quite a blow to the ego for an average-sized woman. Only do what you feel comfortable with. If a traditional dress is a must, perhaps find a pattern and seek out a tailor?
