People are naturally scared of the unknown. When you eliminate what I think is our most useful sense in terms of processing the world around us, our sight, everything around you becomes "the unknown". There could conceivably be anything in the same room as you, and you could never know provided it was quiet enough. Even though it is very unlikely that you're in real danger it's quite a scary though, so I never sleep in complete darkness.
