Why are people so obsessed with sports?

I don't get the obsession with it. I can see it as a form of entertainment here and there though, but nothing more. I don't get how people revolve their lives by watching people run after a ball. What is this crazy obsessive appeal? To fight with someone over a difference of teams, or spend alot of money on team apparel and everything else just sounds like nonsense to me.

e51pegasi sums up my conclusions on this topic well.

I'm a guy, and I've managed to survive more than sixty years without paying any attention at all to sports.

It does seem to me that a huge part of it is a primal need many men feel to belong to a tribe, and to want to prove how much bigger their dicks are than those of any other tribe.

Don't watch them, never play them. Not interesting for me in the least.

I agree. Like, are you getting money if this or that team wins? Are you related to the players? I don't give a rats ass.

i personally love the sport of basketball. I read a study once that said the reason people play sports leads back to their instinctual need for violence and competition. I personally can't go a week without playing a sport before it starts to drive me crazy.

Because it's fun. You sound like a person with no concept of "fun".

Why do people read books or go fishing? It's just something they're into. I love sports(well football at least). I love the history of the game. The great players from the past. The highs when you're team is kicking ass or the lows when they get crushed. The backstories of players. The scandels. The boneheaded plays or calls from the officials. You get into it.

A sense of belonging, a commonality, wanting to be part of a group.

Following/supporting a sports team is sometimes ingrained in people from birth, obsessive sports fans tend to breed obsessive sports fans.

Escapism, a break from the ennui & tedium of work, bill paying & I guess family life.

An excuse to sit around for hours drinking beer & eating salted snacks, also a perfectly valid reason for not being dragged around shopping malls/centres all weekend as well.
