Why are people out of work on government shutdown?

Do they not want to work and just complain about their paychecks being late? It's not like they wont get paid..... just freaking work and use your savings for a few weeks not a big deal

So what savings do you have and how long would they last if your salary vanished? Many people don't actually have savings and live from paycheck to paycheck, but I guess someone in your obviously privileged position wouldn't even think of that, would you?

Privilege? It's called work and it has some outcomes. You work so you get benefits. You don't work so you don't get benefits. It's THAT simple. Want to help others in need? Do it yourself. We should not be forced to contribute to parasites.

I don't know what country you're in, but in Australia there figures are about 4 times the number of unemployed as there are available jobs, and that doesn't include people in part time or casual work who'd like to be working full time.

It was your attitude I was referring to as coming from privilege and how do you suggest "parasites" who can't find work support themselves? Crime? Suicide? Extermination by the privileged?

You said: "how do you suggest parasites support themselves?" and then give the choices: "crime, suicide, extermination" while these are not solutions for self-support. I can smell your hypocrisy and how you struggle to make me look like a terrible person. Therefore, I won't expose my thoughts on this since you already prove you just want to set me up.

I am not even "privileged", I am a poor white male coming from a very poor family and totally dysfunctional background. But you are too brainwashed to understand these things. To you, everything you don't agree with is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, aerophobic or Nazi. Everybody you don't agree with is Hitler's youth. Very democratic and modern and civilized. All leftist garbage.

And first government has been shut down since 22 of December

And that isn’t just people that work in the government.

Those are all federal employees. Park rangers, IRS workers, food inspectors, etc

And not all of them are going to make the lost wages back retroactively once the government is funded

And your tone speaks to the fact you never had the enjoyment of unemployment, never saw how fast your savings drains when you you have nothing coming in but the bills don’t stop

Some people may not be paycheck to paycheck, but most regular people are not far from it

Remember these are peoples lives, families, their children’s future, medical bills all at ransom cause of childish politics

Try to remember statistics about people aren’t faceless numbers. They are real people effected by a shutdown with no potential end in sight

Since neither side is currently willing to budge

I do know how to block someone's posts though, and I've just done it to yours. First time for everything, but I really can't be bothered with your nonsense any longer.

The OP is right, they need to men up and use thier savings, I would be thinking about Nov 2020. Who will you vote for?. Re-elect Mr dumb ass or choose someone else. They would be stupid if they relect dumb ass Trump for a second term and a second government shut down.

How many months worth of living expenses have you saved up? If you lost your job tomorrow, how long could you live if you couldn't find a new job immediately?

I'm assuming you don't have dependants or chronic illness, so just the bare baseline of expenses?

No need to loose your job when you don't have one, and still my checks have been coming monthly. I don't have to worrie. So if Trump want's to keep his tantrum going it don't bother me one bit. As for the people who have lost thier paycheck. I bet thier regreting they voted for Trump yet again come November 2020 they will relect him. They would be very stupid if they do. It's like self flagellation.

              ...please speak English.

Seriously, dude, that was next to impossible to decipher.

This is the best stab I can take at it...

You have no job but you still have checks coming in...you're on welfare? Ok...so you have no savings to live on, but you're gonna say anyone else who doesn't just needs to deal with it? Wut?

Then you assume all the workers who are affected by the government shut down are...Trump supporters? Wut?

You really need to up your expressive language. I really hope none of that was what you were trying to say, or you have even less understanding than Trump, and that is terrifying.

Unfortunately most people in America especially government jobs lack the forsite to keep a savings account for just this kind of deal. I have a reserve savings to keep me alive and under a roof for four months if I get fired. If I was them I would pull a loan out pay for what needs to be paid and then repay it when the government shutdown ends, of course this is dangerous if you don’t know how long it will go so it’s really up to the person to decide what financial path to take but complaining about it on Twitter won’t help.

    • Ellenna

In many cases it's not about lack of forsite (sic, that's foresight) but about not being able to save anything on low incomes. And who would loan money to people who aren't getting paid a salary or wages?

If you have that much financial backup I'm betting you'd be one of the few and most people couldn't afford to do that.

I’m working off a millitary paycheck, as stable as it is in a shutdown we still get paid. There are times where the government messes up in payment though and you can go a few pay periods without anything. I don’t live off of a paycheck because nothing is wrong with shaving 200 off per payment for a savings account.

Doesn't the GOVT always run into some kind of problem every year around tax time? I mean is this "shutdown" really THAT shocking?

It is kind of like a kid who doesn't want to go to school suddenly developing the flu, osteoporosis, or the black plaque on monday morning?
