Why are people more negative than ever now?

You think that the pandemic is the reason why people are more negative than ever now? Do you also find many people to now be more pessimistic than ever about life in general? I sure have noticed that in many people around.

Look at us. We’re all sitting around. Staring at glowing screens.

Stay inside. Use more WiFi. You’ll be fine. Call for delivery. It won’t be cold.

I am getting more negative about 2021 because it is getting worse day by day.

    • Yes, it's sadly a reason why many people are doing the same. Things are continuing to get worse. As we stand, this is overall either a "it'll get worse before it gets better" scenerio or it's a "things will just keep getting worse period" scenario, and I do see why many are looking at the latter type of view. I do want to try to improve my own views of the future though, it's just difficult now.

It's harder than usual to be positive in times like these. Fear of getting sick, fear of a loved one getting sick, needing to be careful all the time, not being able to see friends and loved ones at least under normal circumstances, changes of routine etc...
Almost everyone I know has gotten more negative during 2020 and my mental health has declined like many others peoples has.

    • Try to keep the progress you've made, it'll help you overcome things when shit goes from being thrown at a fan to when it hits the fan

It's hard, but it'll keep you going forward. It may also be a sign you are now aware of more things which cumulatively are trickier to balance

    • I agree with everything you're saying. Fear of getting severely ill and fear of something happening to a loved one of mine has also been very real for me. Almost everyone I've seen has also gotten more negative. It's why even though we have vaccines now, so many people are being so skeptical about them, assuming the worst about them, that they'll actual kill more people than save. When everything has gotten so dark and scary within the past year, it sure does make it easier to look on the dark side of things. I wasn't suggesting that I don't see the reasons why people are getting more negative, I was just asking how many other people have noticed this too. I do, however, want to try and find a way to see a light at the end of the tunnel rather than further darker things to come. I see why people are assuming this, but I still want to find a way to be more hopeful

      • A good place to start is asking yourself why you want to be hopeful, why you want to find the light

Try to answer with more depth than not wanting to find darker darkness. You can give yourself a destination this way, combined with where you're at now you'll then form a path to follow

        • I want to be more hopeful so I can be happier. To add more depth to my answer on not wanting to find darker darkness, I'd have to say that I need to remember to recognize that things may actually not be as bad as many people think they'll be, that those people are simply painting that picture for us because that's how they foresee the future, but that picture is only an illusion because nobody can really see the future, and they're just saying things are hopeless because of how things have been going downhill for the past year. But if you look back into history, there have been many times where things went downhill for certain periods of time, but the downhill phase never was permanent. So why should this time be different? We've dealt with times in history worse than this, and eventually there was a time when things were better again

It's the age of information & there isn't a lot of good information these days.

    • Very true. Plus many people post many negative websites, and the things people have posted have gotten more hope-disparing in recent months due to being written by many of the people out there who are now feeling more hopeless, and they're expressing more negative opinions on what may come out of the topics they're writing about, therefore making readers feel more hopeless, thus having created a vicious cycle. I mean, they're posting articles that have truth to them, stating things which have really happened, but they're adding worst-case-scenerio opinions on what they feel may happen in the future in relation to what they're writing about and making us believe the worst of all possible future options. Example: Assuming that the vaccines will overall end up killing more than they'll save, even though only a few people have died from the vaccines and we really don't know for sure about the bigger picture

I feel that actually started a good while before the pandemic but got even worse after. I think something must be seriously wrong on a society level that makes most people miserable, some needs arent being met for more people. It can be both mental needs like social interaction and belonging, feeling that there is hope for the future (I think most people have very low hope, climate change has a lot of the blame) and feeling that you actually have a purpose to fullfill and arent just "wasting space". As well as physical needs like sleep or lack of exercise/bad diet which all makes people ill and again affects mental health. A lot of things are wrong at the same time

My life was going downhill quickly after I found it super hard to secure fulltime work right ought of collage, the pandemic further cementend that and made me feel like a looser for not having a job that would be pandemic proof... That being said, I know I have been throwing pity parties for myself instead of doing something about this.

From what I remember, people back in 2007 were extremely negative too, and that was before social media really took on.

Social media and algorithms. In reality it has never been better for so much of humanity. Yet we are so miserable and mean.

Yes, people were already very negative, polarized, but the pandemic makes everything so much worse. At least a meteorite hasn't crashed into the Earth.
