Because the cycle of pre-birth biology goes like this:
    Egg
    Zygote (fertilized egg)
    Embryo
    and
    Fetus

They're only in the "developing" stage in pregnancy. Normal age progression doesn't happen until birth. I read somewhere though that in China (I think?) the newborns are considered a year old there.

All thoroughbred horses in the northern hemisphere have a birthday of January 1st regardless of when during the year they are actually born.

Yes. Its purpose lies in horse racing.

Because date of birth is an easy, observable and reliable standard to determine age. Any other way leaves too much room for nature, error and fraud. Few babies are born at exactly 280 days from the last menstrual period anyway. I think it's only like 5% that are born precisely at the date they 'should' be and you'd have to know the exact day you concieved to even begin calculating. Not possible for most, especially historically when marital rape was so common.

A substantial part of our medical terminology is derived from religious belief. Most religions believe a child is not truly alive until is takes its first breath.

Seriously? Most anti-abortion people are religious and believe life begins at conception.

And in history, before diagnostic tools like pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, few people knew their conception date or even had a good idea of it.

It's plain logical to treat a birth date as the first day of life because it's virtually unmistakeable and can be applied as a standard to everyone because everyone HAS to have one and it can be easily observed, confirmed and recorded. Gestation periods can vary from days to weeks off from 9 months. Religion has little to do with it besides the whole 'miracle of life' crap.

    • Come on. I'm just trying to liven up this place with a fun question I actually want an answer to, Mel. I figured with all the incest trolls and kids who are trying to see what they can get away with posting, one fun question to get me and possibly someone else thinking would be good.
      :-)

it's not how old it is, it's how long from the date of birth.

    Because inside it's not a baby it's a fetus,
Also the egg that made them have existed since the mother was born

    • With all the stuff both sides have shown me I have no idea if life begins at conception or once it's outside the womb.

The cells are alive and they are human. You can acknowledge this and still be OK with abortion. It seems like a lot of pro-choicers have to deny the whole human/alive thing to justify abortion. The only justification needed is that you don't want to be pregnant anymore. No need to try to reason it away beyond that.

How is it "life" when it can't live Disconnected from another body ?? In. That case all cells are life and Girls drop eggs every month.are pro lifers just confused because fetus looks cute?? I really don't know what the argument of the other side is ???

You can acknowledge it's alive while still being OK with ending it. No different than taking antibiotics to get rid of an infection. Something is living inside the body and you don't want it to anymore...why go through the ruse of pretending it's not really alive? If you have to do that song and dance then you don't really believe in abortion, do you? The only reason needed for abortion should be 'I want this to end', no supporting essay or additional thought necessary.

Not sure if you're talking to me but i agree it's alive in the same way cancer's alive, I do not really care what people choose to do with their bodies. and actually i do feel somewhat badly about killing cells, even viruses, but i'm sure that's just me

I was just sayin'...I don't think it's necessary to descend into the whole is it alive thing to justify abortion. I personally recognize it is killing. It is stopping life. But I think that is OK, I've had more than one abortion myself. It's better than suffering through an unwanted pregnancy. If you want it out then that's good enough, no need to justify it or feel bad if you don't feel anything. Some people, including pro-choice, insist you must feel something for the fetus. Well, not everybody does. In fact, some are made to feel bad for not feeling bad about it!
