  • Mrs. R. She was my 3rd grade teacher and, at the time, she seemed like every other teacher. But as I got older I grew to respect the woman for more than her teaching skills. She was strict in the most loving way possible and you always wanted to make her proud.

The population of the city exploded and new schools were being built to accommodate the mass amounts of track housing that were sprouting up everywhere. My grammar school was old and now in the heart of a large hispanic community that was very poor and very crowded. Lockdowns were common as crime was rampant in the area. All the teachers fled to the new schools. But not Mrs. R, she was devoted to that school and that community. She refused to leave. She ended up teaching the children of many of her students and those parents would have it no other way.
