Who here actually thinks that these disorders are possession?

Tourette's/Tic disorders. Now, I know most of you are not spiritual, as I have learned when I posted two posts "Question for Atheists" and "Question for Theists"; in short, no one responded to the one for theists.

Anyway, Some people think that Tourette's Syndrome and/or Tic disorders are some sort of possession. In my opinion, although I'm unsure if possession exists, it has been proven to be a neurological condition in the brain, not some phenomenon.

Now, I have tics myself, and I am a bit offended. But what do you think?

This line of thinking is not just offensive. It's deadly.

Probably 99% of religious people do not think this way. I don't particularly have a problem with faith until it crosses over into the realm of something that's actively hateful or destructive. What you're talking about is an insidious form of religious extremism which is actively harmful to people suffering from mental health issues.

It's not exclusive to religion. History is full of stories of people being misdiagnosed, mistreated and abused due to a fundemantal misunderstanding of mental disorders. & this isn't just about Victorian doctors literally finger banging women to cure hysteria, or people being tossed into abusive care centers, where they aren't treated. People, including children, have actually DIED (see rebirthing therapy) due to controversial treatments created because of a complete misunderstanding of mental health.

Unfortunately science denial has gained a lot of traction lately because of the stupid internet.

This along with stigma regarding mental health, public misconceptions about certain disorders and the woeful lack of availability in mental health resources (if you want to get depressed, read the numbers on undiagnosed schizophrenia- a treatable disorder- amongst the homeless) is literally resulting in people slipping through the cracks and never getting the treatment they need.

    It's disgusting.

We have a very close family friend who has SEVERE tourettes along with OCD. He ended up overcoming this and going on to have the most amazing, impressive successful life. If his parents had strapped him down and called a priest instead of working to find the appropriate therapy and medication, I don't even want to think about where he'd be now...homeless? Dead?

        <3 thank you

Yeah, there's a lot of popular misconceptions about mental health in general; the torette's/tic disorder misinformation specifically irritates me.

It's not a even a mental disorder; it's a neurological condition, but people see a tic & it looks strange to them, so they conflate it with some type of spastic mental deficiency.

You can be a completely rational, normal, mentally health person and still have tics, which makes the idea of being excersized against your will even more horrifying.

It's just flat out abuse & the accusation that people with tourettes are possessed by the devil is just heinously fucked up.

I think there's a lot more to it than just saying, "Tourettes is/isn't possession." There's a large amount of things that would have to be true/not true. For example, can it be helped at all with drugs? If yes, it's probably not possession. If no, it may be possession. Then there are questions such as, for example, "What does the person say in their tourettes?". Like I said at the beginning, there's a lot more to it than just, "Tourettes is/isn't possession." It is very unlikely to be possession, but it's certainly possible for it to be possession.
