The reason why babies are so useless it's because a newborn is literally the smallest self sustaining body that the female body can produce without ripping in half.
If we werent bipedal most likely pregnacy would last for longer. Humans are born weak compared to other animals because we can afford to be useless during that time because of our large brains, which coincidentally also makes giving birth harder because we are bipedal thus our hips are smaller.
I should add that baby gorillas will also die if they arent assisted after birth since they still need to drink milk because they are a mammal and that's a mammal defining trait.
