        • It's actually necrophile...

Like pedophilia - pedophile. Not pedophiliac.

          • Really?

            • It sounds a little like a 'back formation'. An example of this is the word 'conversate'.

Firstly, there is the verb 'converse'

To converse is to have a 'conversation'.

People, either unaware of the word 'converse' or having heard it incorrectly, but being aware of the word 'conversation', formed the neologism 'conversate'. Converse is correct, conversate is considered slang.

The same with the bizarre American word burglarise.

Firstly, there is the verb 'burgle'.

To burgle is to be a 'burglar' and to commit a 'burglary'.

People in America, for whatever reason, stopped using burgle and burglary, but maintained the word burglar. Having seemingly forgotten there is already a verb for what a burglar does, they backwards formed a new word... A burglar 'burglarises'.

So I expect necrophiliac is a similar example. Necrophiles are interested in necrophilia. But perhaps some people forgot that there is a word already for necrophiles, so adapted necrophilia into 'necrophiliac'. It may be an American English thing.
