I went with 'acceptable', after almost choosing 'common', because 'normal' is only considered as such when it's totally accepted by society. The 'normal' thing to do isn't always the most logical, but if it's approved by others, the vast majority of people tend to do it.
Drinking Vodka when your underage is normal/common but by far not acceptable so I have to go with common =P
There are various examples and acceptable definitely isn't a synonym for normal!
Good poll, I'm pretty sure everyone on this site has a different definition of normal. I picked "common" - like if someone says "I do this and this deplorable embarrassing thing that we're supposed to not do" .. if lots of people do it anyways, it's normal.
'Normal' is defined as conformance to the average. i.e. what is common. People think, though, that 'normal' is synonymous with positive behaviour; it is not. In fact many times, normality is linked directly to negative, destructive behaviour.
In maths, it means standing up perpendicularly. In the real world, it means most common. On IIN, I think it means acceptable.
At first I almost chose "common" but then I thought about it longer and chose "understandable". True, a lot of the times whats considered the "normal" thing to do is usually commonly done amongst ourselves, but there are things that are normal that aren't commonly done. To best explain what I mean, I will use an example because I find myself struggling to find the right words. There have been many serial killers throughout history, some more well known than others. Its fairly common to hear about them, but what they do is not normal at all. Why is it not normal, because what they do is not "understandable". Theres no real understandable reason as to why they act this way. I mean sure if you ask them why they did it they may say "the voices told me to do it" but it doesn't make sense, its not understandable. They didnt do it in self defense, or to defend their family, they just did it because they heard "voices". Ugh, my example still doesnt explain what I'm trying to say! So frustrating, so I will just leave it at that. Hopefully someone will understand what I'm trying to say lol
"inoffensive" is an interesting choice, gradually "acceptable" and "common" become influenced by society's expectations, and eventually people come to regard normal things as anything that does not personally impact them, regardless of what their opinions about that thing actually is.
Great poll!
Normal is always acceptable but not always common. Common is an indication of frequency which is normally acceptable. It is frequently acceptable to have a common law wife, but not an infrequent situation. It is frequently unacceptable not to be officially married to your fiance if the moon is shining and normally all the kings men eat peanut butter except not at midnight for it is abnormal without crackers unless it is on a Monday, which introduces a new parameter to the equation from which no extraction is probable which may or may not be normal. But that equation changes tomorrow when the election takes place which is normal as well as acceptable. This is expressed in the context of an existentialist concept of the universe.
Is there a prize?
I went for common, but it begs th@ age old question "What is normal"? xxx
I put acceptable because being normal to me is doing what people want you to be like. When you are normal you have a certain level of comformity, that they have to act a certain way because society says be like this or you are an outcast. When you act in accordance to the prevailing social standards you, as a person lose your unique self and are boring and normal. Why be boring and normal though? I say just be yourself and another thing I always say is "Abnormal is the new normal!". So be who you are and love the skin you are in. :)
