A (self-employed) artist could be cool, because you can retain a lot of personal freedom that way. For me, it's much more attractive to be self-employed than it is to submit to a system where you become entirely dependent on an employer and have no freedom of work. I admire the open-mindedness of people who realise they have options outside that world, and I admire people who value their personal freedom enough to protect it even if it making less money. It's all about values, and it makes sense to me that someone who works in that way is more likely to share the same values as me.
