Many around me who sail boats too, think that "shit happens" (bad stuff, like falling overboard or getting hurt). I don't agree. If one is paying attention to what they are doing and have maintained their equipment properly, then there is no reason to expect bad things to happen.
Same with the first of the two sayings. Do it or not, but don't start out half way defeated by saying you'll try. Self confidence is a very good thing.
