  • I'd prefer to be referred to as black. Only because African American makes no sense to me since I was not born in Africa and later became and an American citizen. That then leaves the question of what should we be called? Although as howaminotmyself stated anyone could make either phrase sound derogatory. I don't understand why the "N" word was an option. There are a million other words in the English language I don't understand why people decide to use that one (white, black or anyone else). I personally refuse to use any racial slur regardless of whether I'm part of the group or not.

    • That's great @mar! I don't use racial slurs either. All they are are ways to put down people who are different than the person speaking.

Also, that's why I get confused. Most black people in the US aren't born in Africa, so why call them "African" Americans.

The "N" word is an option because, whether we like it or not, there are still people who use it and think it's ok. :(

And to everyone who left a comment:

Thank you. For the most part, your comments have been helpful. I appreciate them.
