  • Yes, but the people who historically inhabited the Iberian peninsula were not from the Latin tribe. They simply adopted the Latin language.

About 60 per cent of the words which we use today, are from Latin, in one form or another.

Does that make all English speakers Latin?

    • I'm not arguing that Latinos speak Latin, I was explaining their name.

      • The term 'Latino', is a misnomer, and does not correctly describe a person, people or tribe, in its commonly used present context.

The people who are descended from various tribes of the Iberian peninsula, and whose ancestors emigrated to the New World continents and adjacent islands, are most likely (but not necessarily) not to be of the Latin tribe. The Latin people, are descended from the tribe which inhabited the Italian peninsula, in the central region historically known as Latium.

'Latino', describes a language, not any person (except true Latin people). By this token, ALL Romance language speakers, as well as English language speakers, could also be termed 'Latino'.

        • A word is defined by its use not its origin.

The word Latino arose from a confusion, and is thus a misnomer, but that does not change its modern meaning.

          • Then I can use any word, in any way, and change its meaning?

            • Sorry, by use I mean use by the general population. Language is a method of conveying meaning. A word is meant to be a sound or collection of figures (if written) that both you and the person you are talking to can understand. If you use a different meaning than most people, then they won't understand you and language will be ineffective and pointless.
