I find the Arab-Israeli Wars very interesting, and the relationship between Israel and it's neighbours, especially Egypt. The reasons why the involvement of the US and Russia in the region have allowed it to spiral out of control is very interesting. We can learn a lot by studying it. Afghanistan is a very interesting place as well, although I know less about it.
I find it good that because this history is so important right now, we can relate it to real life, which is more than can be said for anything from more than 200 years ago.
