When I last had one it was avast's free version and it worked well mainly because it didnt hoard resources. My belief is as long as you're knowledgeable about computers and smart about what you're downloading, and can see through the variety of dumb traps to get you to download/click/install shit, antiviruses are superfluous. I haven't used an antivirus in years now, neither has a buddy of mine, and in spite of a ton of torrenting neither of us have had any infections or malware yet.
Definitely don't pay for an antivirus unless you need or will use the extra features. Also, you might want to copy and paste this question on an actual tech/gaming forum for more specific responses.
