Friend of friend I think is best if you are lucky to have friends. Then, I don't have a smartphone but if you do tinder or bumble seem to be good.
If neither of those, I would no longer be speaking from experience, but I would think if you have any hobbies that would involve seeing others, like rock climbing or a biking group or an open mic night, you'd be in a position to meet someone that would have a shared interest.
You have to let go of this "highly inconfident massively afraid" shit though. Just say you are confident and eventually it will be true. Think about really wanting to fuck or do whatever it is that you like with someone and let that be what drives you.
And when you meet someone just imagine they are very ugly and you are very attractive and treat them like you would not as a partner per se but more like you would a friend.
And just smile and try to reveal as many flawed things about yourself as you can, without sounding like they bother you.
That's as much as I think I can say for now, but yeah, women are as horny as men so the odds are in your favor, confidence is 80% what they look for and showering/having a pulse account for maybe 18.5-19% of the remaining 20%
If you are truly "old" I would endeavor even to get rejected just to enjoy the rush of it, and so it won't become scary for you.

And I am in my mid 20's so I am not reallty that old, but old enough to make the fact I've never had a girlfriend strange.
