Exactly, but I also think that America shouldn't be considered just a region on Earth - it's 2 different continents. It makes as much sense as putting Africa and Europe together as a 'region on Earth'.
I see your point and, no, I've never used the word Asians to refer to people from different countries with such diverse cultures, it simply doesn't make sense. That's another pet peeve of mine with most Americans who do use it. It's an umbrella term that throws all of them in the same bag. I'm certain that one of the reasons why I don't use it is because in Portuguese such term is never used. I translate some concepts from one language to the other and apply the one that pleases me the most. Therefore, I say the United States and use proper Asian demonyms.
