When would you not forgive someone?

Few days ago I had a fight with a close friend of mine, we have been friends since high school. I lent him my car and he crashed while driving drunk, so I got extremely angry with him. Then he got angry too and said he didn't do it on purpose and apologized and that he would pay for the damage. But I felt enraged and started swearing and it escalated to a big fight.

Is It Normal?

  • He’s an asshole. He says it wasn’t on purpose. That’s bullshit. He chose to get behind the wheel while he’s drunk. He could have killed someone.

  • Forgiveness need not always mean reconciliation. If he doesn't pay you back take him to small claims court.

He says it wasn't on purpose, but I say if he was powerless over his drunkenness then he has a drinking problem, and is an alcoholic. If one does not have a designated driver then one must carefully monitor one's drinking. It's not that hard to pace one's self, make every other drink something non alcoholic, and average about only one drink an hour. Besides what kind of desperate person borrowers some one else's car to go out, and get drunk?

  • When there's really no excuse, and when they don't own up to it.

  • He ain't gonna pay nothing back. Even a minor crash will cost about $2,000 at a body shop to repair. Over priced of course but anyways. You might want to find out what insurance options you have (but do not expect much in this case) or legal options. If he is so irresponsible that he would drive drunk, do you think he is gonna open his wallet to pay for your car?

Never lend your car to anyone, seriously. That machine is your freedom and livelihood. And then your "friend" gets drunk and takes it out to drive?

I would be done with his ass.

  • In your case he did apologies and offer to pay back, but really its up to you. Personally I never forgive someone who breaks my trust.

  • Umm I hope he didn't do it on purpose... Don't lend your car out, he sounds like a mess. You sound like a mess also. If he doesn't pay you back, take him to court. Make yourself whole.
