"Sorry, I can't make it because I don't want to." takes more energy than "I can't make it."
I guess it's because they expect a reason, but you're right.
It's ok to just text and say "thanks for inviting me! Unfortunately I can't make it but I hope you have a great night".
If someone replies asking you why you can't make it then they are weird. Ignore them
Yep if they ask, that's rude and none of their business.
