Honestly I would play that card If I left my kid somewhere and forgot them. Dont want the kid to realize how incompetent their parent actually is until they are smart enough to figure it out by themselves.
Hell when I was little I did a prank to my parents by sneaking into their room dressed in a sheet and lock picking their door (one of those crappy locks that could be picked with a coin). Got jumped by my probably scared dad.
It's not bad to laugh at it. My parents raised me and my brothers with a long leash. Go out with your bikes for 5 hours and come back before sundown kind of freedom.
I think that’s a much better parenting style (given you live in a safe area).
Not letting kids have a degree of independence does them no favours once they reach adulthood. Looking back I’m genuinely amazed I was never the victim of crime at 18, I was just winging it with no street smarts whatsoever.
To be fair my neighborhood was INCREDIBLY safe. Looking back on it, it was probably the safest area in my state. The last murder took place in the 80s, the biggest problem was DUIs so as long as you were home by sundown you were fine. All you had to do as a kid is say no to free candy from random strangers.
My cousins in chicago on the other hand have the same freedom as me when I was a kid but I sure as hell am more critical of my aunt and uncle for doing so. They are 50% Korean. I know the gang shit they do in chicago involving asian americans.
Your leash as a kid should be as long as the reasonable safety of the area permits and in chicato that's a hell of a lot lower than my homogeneous upper middlecass community I grew up in.
Honestly surviving until 18 gives you charicter. You didnt get kidnapped or was hit by a car. It's natural selection set at the lowest bar.
When I was little my family left me at Denny’s

My parents were the kind who would instead yell at the child for leaving their sight, why play off a mistake when you can blame someone else, right?
Is it bad that I laughed at that prank gone wrong? It sounds like a scene from Modern Family.
