"[T]he edge of neverland" was the inspiration for many of Dali's famous paintings; he would lay down on a sofa while holding a spoon, and right before he would fall asleep he would drop the spoon onto a plate. The sound would wake him up, causing the things he saw to remain fresh in his memory.
I absolutely revere you for posting this comment. I had no bloody idea this was an actual/common thing. Hypnagogia, phosphenes - the descriptions and personal accounts of people match mine perfectly.
