Children in their teens I think are the best time because they are at an age where their mind can be shaped. It also allows yourself to set an example for them when they become adults.
I get what you're saying - you mean in terms of being able to reason with them, the higher cognitive development, etc, and you're stating your own preference.
But technically, before seven is where the biggest difference is made in terms of education and development. I forget the exact numbers, but a significant amount of money could be saved on "clean up" for fucked up teens and adults (think prison, drug/addiction rehab, etc) if it were invested in early childhood education/intervention.
When can you handle kids the best?

Hell no, I work with teens. Teens can be surprisingly set in their ways.

Not saying your opinion is wrong, just some info.

This is what your boyfriend crow has to say...
After six but before twelve.
Before six they're just doing everything that can probably hurt them and after twelve they're pushing the boundaries. - crow
