All human action is informed by self-interest so it's not a far stretch to call selfishness itself a sort of natural "ethos".
And by extension, religion is a thing that attempts to achieve the ends of self-interest by denying it.
In all of nature, we're the one thing that doesn't live in symbiosis with it. Our minds are the natural enemy of life; its bent is constantly towards that which will destroy it.
