What would you do in case of an active shooter in your classroom/school?

Our school had a lockout that wasn’t a drill. It was announced on the intercom but the slight mistake in the ladies voice made it sound like she said ‘lockdown’. At that moment I thought it was a shooter and my heart was pounding against my chest. I thought “This is it, this is really happening. This is when I die.” Thankfully the teacher told us that it was a lockout and that we were freaking out over nothing.

This raises the question, In case of an active shooter in your classroom or school what is the best action to take? What will you do in this situation?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

    There is no easy answer.
But minimize yourself as a target.
    If you are upright.
If you are upright and running.
    You're a target.
Find a place to hide if possible.
At the very least, play dead.

Our schooling system has become a huge joke! We’re feeding kids a ton of inaccurate information, giving insane ammounts of stress, and fear of shooters.

I remember when hearing the fire alarm meant either a student pulled the alarm for fun, or “the popcorn in the microwave” set it off! Now shit’s real!

    • If shooting weren’t happening every other day they wouldn’t have to make kids fearful. But it’s needed now sadly.

I firmly believe that all teachers and school staff should armed and properly trained with training on stalking and taking out the shooter. Background checks and psychological tests would have to be done of course to avoid the possibility of a shooter from within. I am quite sure this would deter most shooters from even trying knowing there are armed people that will shoot back.

Really? Because last time I checked the country with the most school shootings happens to be America. Here in Holland and various other European countries, it's either never or barely happened.

So yea, it does work and I do know how well making them illegal altogether works.

The gun free zone thing is irrelevant. You can still go to a store and buy a gun. It's still readily available. Parents of kids will mostly have a gun too.

They don't have them here and school shootings so happen to be non existent. Coincidence? I really think not.

Besides that, you people do NOT need a gun. Get your tinfoil hats off please.

            Hahaha really?
            Population of Holland-17.02 million
Population of US - 325.7 million

We have more more births, more deaths, more cases of cancer, more heart attacks, more car accidents just because we have far more people. If we reduced our population from 325.7 million to 17.02 we would naturally have less shootings so your comparison is pretty hollow.

If you go by per capita, one is more likely to be killed in a mass shooting in France where their gun laws are far more restrictive than the US.

We also have grizzly bears, black bears, cougars, boars, javelinas, wolves, coyotes, badgers, wolverines, feral dogs, and feral hogs. Are there many of those in Holland?

Most police officers you speak to here regarding the matter are in favor of private gun ownership and they always give the same reason - They can't be everywhere in a moments notice.

Maybe if holland had more guns they wouldn't have been over run by Nazis in WW2.

Don't need a gun? Tell that to anyone who has used a gun to stop a rape, murder, or any type of attack from human or animal. You are very naive. No one needs a fire extinguisher or a police officer until...you know, they actually do.

Do you realize what disarming a country like America would be? It's impossible. There are more guns than people and there are millions of unregistered guns as well. The problem has gone past the point of no return.

Considering most shooters kill themselves, there's no reason whatsoever to think they'll be at all deterred by knowing that there is somebody who will shoot back. All that does is make the teachers and staff a target.

And even if it did deter a mass shooter, the number of accidental deaths and intentional murders would greatly outnumber the lives saved.

First of all, remember the shooter at that lgbt club in Florida? He was going to go on a killing spree at Disneyworld but saw an armed sheriff and drove to the club. Secondly, if there’s going to be intentional murders caused by the armed teachers, why don’t we ever see school shootings caused by teachers? The media with their “ban guns” agenda won’t tell you what the actual statistics of shootings are. Like did you ever hear about the Oregon mall shooting? One person with a concealed carry permit pulled a weapon and didn’t even fire, yet the shooter ran into a closet and killed themself. Never made the mainstream news really, and I didn’t see any articles past a week about that recent shooting where the sheriff killed the shooter before he could kill anyone, and even knowing that there’s trained people with guns will stop school shootings imo. Even if it’s like the Air Marshal program where it’s almost at random, this will deter possible shooters. Most of these people are doing it for attention or to make a statement and if they know someone is going to shoot them dead as soon as they drew I feel like that would be a deterrent. Evil people are going to find ways to kill people no matter what your solution is and I think we all know that rubber batons isn’t going to work to stop a shooter or anyone with serious intent to take lives. And I don’t claim to know where your morals stand but if one school shooting is prevented by armed staff isn’t it worth it to stop that one shooter?

      • CozmoWank

Easy avoid the rooms that have the lights turned off. Go in a closet of one of tge rooms that have the lights on. Or just open a window and leave. Or break said window and leave. Easy peasy. The school drills are beyond stupid on that stuff. Oh and of cpurse i would be swearing out the giverment for gavung it illegal for law abiding citizens to be armed in such locations. Cause then i wouldnt have to go through that bullshit.

Jesus I can't believe I just read that from someone in a first world country. There'd be a riot if even that much happened in my country. I've thought about it before but just as an idle daydream. If there's absolutely no escape route or decent hiding place then strategically I think it would be best to hide around a corner or a door, tackle them to the floor and hold down their trigger finger to unload their gun. Once their gun is empty some others could help you knock him unconscious, or you just run. Of course I'm not saying I'd actually do any of that, you'd need to be super hero levels of brave for that. Realistically I'd just lose my mind in a blind panic like the vast majority of people would.

I live in a very redneck state and at our local high school almost every truck you see has a gun rack in the back. It’s a rather large school but we’ve never had any threats or such the closest we’ve had is a kid lighting a trash can on fire while welding in metal shop. Is there something different in other states? Is it the possible shooters knowing almost anyone could run out to their truck and grab a gun to kill them with? If it’s something about the school system we sure as heck better find it soon

    BTW for all of you
    " I'm not in school crowd "
It doesn't just happen in schools.
    It happens in
    shopping malls.
    Movie theatres.
    Concerts.
    Outdoor gatherings.
    Your gun will save you?
    Really.
Try hitting the vegas shooter if you had been in the crowd.
    He's 2 story's up with an AR.
You're on the ground in a panicked crowd, with your pistol.
    You have, 16 shots?
    He has hundreds.
    Good luck.

An AR-15 only holds up to 20 rounds. Also, if you want a fair assessment of whom would win then you would first need to identify the handheld firearm (pistol) the person on the ground is using. I would guess that the person is a civilian so they would most likely be handling the Colt M1911 which fires .45 ACP and will hit not only heavier, but faster than the AR-15 and will neutralize the threat handling said AR-15 who is 2 stories up before the threat is able to maximize the damage and/or deaths.

However, safety is bot guaranteed for either party.
