I think one of the mistakes people make (myself included) is to expect to automatically feel like doing something. Now for some people it is just that easy. I am not one of those people. If you want to know what to do when bored, you are probably also not one of those people. The trick is to just start something, and by something I mean just about anything (it could be fucking cleaning your room, doesn't really matter), and start by forcing yourself to do it. Once you start the task (and start with easy but productive steps like, I don't know, picking up the sirty underwear and transferring them to the hamper) you will start to get involved and feel motivated and naturally less bored, and from there you can even do more things until you get actually tired at which point I reccomend sleeping.
The reason why people have trouble with this is that there are so many automatic, instant-gratification fixes for boredom. You could flip on the tv, eat a brownie (magic or not), or....visit this website. The problem occurs when you either a) get sick of your automatic-gratification activities, b) decide you need to stop doing so much of them, c) someone else decides you need to stop doing so much of them and proceeds to stop you or c) any combination of the above.
Mind you, if you are still hooked on instant-gratification solutions (which you probably are if you are on this site, in a post about boredom specifically) you probably took one look at this entry, figured it would take at least two minutes to read, and moved on to the next post/website/whatever, and thus I am wasting my time...well, I suppose I'm really not because I enjoy putting these phenomenons into words, which is sort of why I want to be a psychologist (I figured the personal anecdote was ok, you know, since it is extremely probable that no one will read this.
What to do when I'm bored?
