I'll have to go with rain as being most calming. I mostly like it when it's raining for a LONG time, though...
Thunderstorm gives me goosebumps, but in a good way. Only if i can stay at home though, i like cuddling up with my GF and cat and reading/snoozing a bit then.
It's a close race among Rain/Thunder, Wind, and Fan Blowing. Thunderstorms can be either a thrill or a sleeping drug for me, depending on the place and time. Wind is my absolute best friend (as I always feel too warm).
However, I could sit for hours in front of a fan, just watching it spin and playing pretend with it. I might imagine the breeze is the powerful gust of an upcoming blizzard, and I live with a family of cave-dwellers near the peak of a mountain. Or, the face of the fan could be part of a high-tech space control station, and it's my job to monitor and prepare spacemen for takeoff.
Television static works in a similar way, but there's less imagination involved and more of deep thought. As a kid, this static would always keep me entertained for at least another hour after the VHS tape reached its limit. I even sat through a lengthy and boring explanation on how Walt Disney created Bambi (sepia tone, no doubt) in order to reach the static.
Birds chirping, however, is a sound unwelcome to sleepy ears. Especially in the morning, when I'm trying to ignore the sunlight and sleep longer - Here come the early birds ready to fill up the sky with repetitively high-pitched tones.
Although rarely thought of, I find it soothing just listening to the rumbling wheels of a train moving along the track. I've been raised in a house located right next to some train tracks, between our neighbors' house and ours. The train would always come early in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, and occasionally at night. Instead of counting sheep, I counted train cars growing up. They typically average around 150. The train would help put me right to sleep when it came.
Sorry about the length - I tend to ramble on about the tiny details, but you can grab the top sentence of each paragraph to get the core of it all. Hope that can help some! :)
