Most long term homeless people have complex, long term mental health illnesses often compounded by street drug & or alcohol issues.
Then you have people who just don't have a home due to financial issues & probably have exhausted their families/friends goodwill.
The latter are far easier, give them somewhere warm, safe, 3 square meals a day, basic medical care & postal address they can use for job applications et cetera. Offer them tailored advice on anything they require & actively help them to find gainful employment. Give them a sense of hope. They just want their 'normal' life back. A hand up now may prevent a bad situation deteriorating into something far worse.
The long termers are difficult to help, they have been ostracised, mistrustful & are reticent to engage with services that are there to help. Hospitalisation is the only realistic option for them. Good luck getting them anywhere near an ambulance. Some do recover, manage their own health issues & live within society. Others go on to live in sheltered accommodation where they feel settled. There just seems very little appetite to help them do so.
nah, not exactly. Throughout the ages most homeless where mental ill people who couldnt work.
of couse there is the ones that cant seem to find work, but this is more due to automatization of industries and the great ammount of highly specialized jobs than a matter of direct economy.
Not a fan of Oprah, but I will never utter another bad word about that woman. (even though she's fucked in the head!)
Many years back she had a friend of a friend on her show. The woman couldn't live on her own and needed help due to a major illness. Oprah came to her house, fixed the place up and spent a ton of cash on her.
So you would think it ends there? Maybe a follow up show? No follow up show, but every few months would continue to write this woman a hefty check to help her. Not only that, but would actually stop in to see her and has multiple times throughout the years.
Oprah never spoke about this or what else she has done for this woman and from what we were told does this for MANY others who were on her show and even more who never once made an appearance.
So, even though Oprah can be considered a bitch, nasty, mean or whatever else the public tosses at her, this is the true side of the person she is from people who she helped out. That means more than what the news claims.
And, I'm not bashing you for bringing up Oprah's name. I have before too prior to knowing what I do now.
there is 2 main kind of homeless. The freaks and and poor.
the poor are normal people that is getting a hard time on live. a public common place for them to live and feed, and aid to getting employed should do the work, the rest is up to them.
The freaks, they should be put on a asylum.
This is an excellent solution. I don't know why you'd get a thumbs down. On another site someone suggested having them work on public infrastructure projects. Gets people off the street and doing productive work.
In addition to pay for honest work, they can be allocated community gardens to grow their own food. They'll form communities, work their bodies, learn responsibility and be able to save up for clothes, housing, education, etc. Gives people a chance at life again and some dignity. Not through hand-outs, but their own effort and willingness.
The combination of physical exercise, fresh air, fresh food, talking to other people in their same situation and being in control of their own destiny does wonders for state of mind. I think it's way better than sitting in front of a psych and being fed meds.
This already exists in the U.S and it hasn't solved homelessness. Anyone can go into a day labor office, fill out 5 minutes worth of paperwork, and they will be sent to do manual labor and get paid that day.
We did this to make ends meet and it is a way out of homelessness, but many are too sick from mental illness or drug and alcohol addictions, that they can't or won't do it.
Yes, create some actual normalcy in their lives.
House them, but make them work for it. Most wouldn't want to live in a place provided for them and usually only accept handouts by way of begging on the streets yet they are too proud to accept shelter.
Make them earn something, be proud of something and more so that they mean something.
It's not just feeding, or even having a place for them to stay. It's also about healthcare. Maybe it would be a good idea to not only build complexes to house and feed the homeless, but order them to seek help and counseling at the very place they stay - at the home. They can employ healthcare professionals for both mental and drug addicted persons. The only problem with that is who goes there? When you consider families are on the list as homeless, would you have two variations of a complex or "home"? One for single persons and another for families?
The sad thing is for the most part homeless people don't cost a state or a country much so they are not a real issue. They are only an issue when the state wants to build something or those heartless persons want them to stay clear from their corporations/offices.
I give them a few dillars or buy them food if i can. I dont have huge numbers of homeless where i live. Idk what id the answer, i agree most are either mentallly ill or drug users. Some would not want to live in buildings, others would. Idk if theres one single solution.
