What should be done about the london riots?

They appear to be getting out of hand, the riot in Brixton seems like the spark to the fire, it doesn't seem like protesting for the death of the young man at all. More like an excuse to loot, and vent out pent-up anger although not in the right way. It pisses me off because these people are looting, smashing up the shops and burning the homes of decent everyday people. How should the government deal with the situation to get it under control again

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • What the hell happened to using water cannons and tear gas? What happened to arresting people as soon as they began to behave inappropriately? Height of summer and they have their faces masked, bit of a clue don't you think?

    • Bloody human rights!!

Personally I'd use dye instead of water to destroy all their designer clothes, or acid would be even better!!

Seen all this before as I live in N. Ireland and they don't have the brains to realise they're destroying their own communities. In fact, when they all get their wrists slapped and told not to do it again, you will learn that a lot of them are not locals but have travelled to join the violence. Nutters!!!

      • I'm with you on that one! There are a number of them who travel to actually instigate the violence. A bit like when football hooliganism was rife and the authorities should be taking at least the same strong arm tactics in dealing with this.

People who join in and destroy their own communities should be made to clean it up and repay the community (in work if not money).

  • Judging by most of the answers, I'm hoping nobody answering this poll is actually in Government...

  • shoot them over and over with rubber bullets until they are in so much pain that they beg to stop. Then arrest them and cut their hands and feet off so they cannot do anything again. This would also mean that they would have to beg for the services to help them after what they did to the services...

  • Seriously they have no talent but just standing there, they should move on and haven't even had a new improvement of stopping the rioters

  • You never send your nation's army into a dangerous zone against the people they've sworn to protect. Kent State, anyone? That's the kind of action that turns soldiers into rogue snipers.

All those kids need to get their potshots in. They're young and stupid, and don't have a lick of sense in their body, much less any ideological motivation based in years of query, research, and participation. They should enjoy it while it lasts, since it will be the herald to another 1984-esque social policy...as the Queen's Country is wont to do from time to time.

  • Call the army and the riots will end pretty quickly.

  • Kill police, burn banks, Destroy government buildings, burn the governor's houses, kill the queen. It's all good.

I think burning houses of normal people is a no-no, and I dont think that they are doing it.

Don't believe what the media says.

    • Considering that you see peoples cars on fire and average houses being set on fire while they are robbing each other and destroying innocent peoples businesses, they are doing more harm to each other than harm to the goverment.

      • Yeah, now I changed my mind.
The riot started for a reason, a reason that is nothing now.

Now people just want to steal stuff and feel tuff burning cars.

        Sad stuff.

    • So the ten year old kids who were looting the other day, should be shot in the face by an army firing squad? Is that what you're saying? It's ok for an army to kill children? Will you pull the trigger on that little ten year old who...in any other circumstance would just get popped in the mouth by his parents for being a little shit? That kid...that kid's gotta die for stealing a Nintendo DS and you're gonna send him to hell personally?

      • The ten year old's shouldn't be there!!!

Where do the parents think they are?

Or is it the same excuse they give here in N. Ireland? "He was only going out to the shop for me and got caught up in the violence" oh boo bloody hoo!!

We were watching the news the othe night and I think my husband has come up with the solution. The news was on about Iraq and he said, "Send the rioters to Iraq if they want to fight!"

I honestly think that the UK will see the introduction of compulsory national service in the not too distant future. If they're not allowed to control them in schools anymore, then they will have to learn respect and discipline in the forces - before it's too late for them and we have a generation of total delinquents!

My Polish friend says that when it snows in Poland they all have to clear it from their front door to the road or they are fined a lot of money! Here, all the unemployed lie in bed all day and go out fighting / robbing at night. They should all be forced to get up and sign for their dole every single morning - even if the queue is 3 hours long. Then at least they're out of bed and not up all night! Those fit should clear snow (not the army) or sweep up leaves, or brush the streets. Anything, to ensure they're not working secretly on top of their benefits.

        • I'm actually with you on the whole compulsory service thing. My dad told me that if he had stayed in Germany he would've had to volunteer for a government work program (military or civilian). Being a military service-member now myself, I'm inclined (along with him) to favor the Starship Troopers concept: you don't get to vote unless you've served your country.

This isn't to say every 18 year old should have to join the military. I think it should be a choice between civilian and military (here in the USA, it would be Americorps/Peace Corps/Military). A program like this could put hundreds of thousands of youth to work on projects already deemed necessary by federal and state consensus.

          • It would give these hooligans some pride in their country but the UK government are set to cut back on the numbers employed by their forces.

The whole damn lot is a load of nonsense. We have grown up with 'experts' designing a policy of children's rights, which means 'asking children nicely' if they would like to do something, eg reading. If they say no, adults are supposed to respect their decision and not force them to do anything they don't want to! Eh??

I'm a private tutor and I ASK no child to do anything. I just say "Read that!" There is no option for that word 'no' to me. The kids love me and the 'weak' parents can't believe the children do my homework without bribery etc. It's simply down to respect.

I hope every one of them is given the option of Iraq or jail.

            • Are you serious about that children's education policy? What happened to the Dickensian model? Or the Catholic model for that matter?

I think I'll be downgrading the quality of an Oxford education now ;)
