What separates humans from animals?

To me I think it's that humans have a higher level of thinking and rationality. Once they throw that away and start killing, raping, and hurting others, they lose what makes them human and are no better than a wild animal. How about you?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I think there isn't a clear, black or white divide.
Some animals are capable of remarkable cognitive abilities and just like humans fall on a spectrum from extremely dumb to extremely gifted, some bright animals might overlap the human curve a bit.

I think it's in the lack of choice. Anything an animal does is solely instinct whether we see it as good or bad, whereas a human has options, foresight, more self-awareness, knowing other options exist, etc.

Animal cognition used to be assumed as purely instinctive but modern science seems to give animals increasingly more credit. Species like the great apes, cats, dogs, dolphins and elephants are especially remarkable. Even cattle are often underestimated.

Sort of agree but I don't think killing and raping makes them equal to animals (even most animals don't kill fellow members of their species, and only certain species are know to have "rapists"). it makes them equal to shit.

Sometimes, the more time an animal spends with humans, the more it acts like a human. Maybe the only difference is language.
