You're not missing much. Imagine being a sardine packed into a flying can.
Safest way to travel but also a real pain in the ass. You've gotta get to the airport, go through security, check in your bags, then wait, etc ... than at the other end you've gotta wait for your bags and someone's gotta pick you up and drive you to where you want to be, or you've gotta pay to rent a car. The food served on the plane, if any at all, probably sucks. And it never fails, you're jammed in next to the most repulsive passenger on the plane. If you're taller than average you'll have broken kneecaps by the time you land. Between all that, if the trip's less than 750 miles or so you're better off just driving.
I love it! It does depends on the airline you fly on though. Air New Zealand is fanstasic. They turely make you feel so relaxed and content.
The first 500 feet off the runway is truly liberating. The rest of the flight is more tolerable if you work in your seat, or sleep.
Drive, take the bus, or hitchhike. You get to see and do more and meet more people on the way
