My first thought was that the officers were poorly trained while the old man had excellent battle training, probably Vietnam veteran. The officers had too much patience with him, which eventually cost them lives. When I read farther about the case turned out I was right, The officer Kyle Dinkheller was only 22 years old, which would indicate that he was a rookie and it was most likely his first serious encounter, while the attacker Andrew Brannan was a Vietnam combat veteran who knew exactly what he was doing. Its hard to say if it was a lack of proper training or the inexperience, because no matter how well they train you, the first time when you realize your life is on the line you can never be ready for it.
