  • I think my perspective may be a bit wonky compared to others, but this is how I personally see it (for both male/female):

After the age of about 25-ish, anything goes.
Anyone under 20 shouldn't date people over 30.
Anyone under 16 shouldn't date anyone over 20.
People in the 20-25 range should be cautious about dating people over 30, but I think it is still appropriate for it to happen.

Why? Because, in my opinion, anyone under 20 is not a complete adult yet with adult confidence, so I think it is mentally and emotionally unfair for someone who is an "older" adult to date them.

Basically, from what I've seen over the years, is that most people become comfortable with and understand who they are, between the ages of 20-25. By the time they hit their 30s, not only do they know who they are, but they also have a greater understanding of who others are and how they fit amongst the society they live in. People 16-20 have established their adult personalities, but are largely just experimenting with how to be an adult.

    • Not wonky at all... possibly the best answer to this type of question I've read!

      • Thank you. It's kind of you to say so.

I still think it's wonky because it is not always what people do in real life and it varies drastically depending on a person's culture.

It is just a personal opinion.

  • Interesting you've only focused on males being the older partner. Why bring gender into a question of age?

It's too difficult to confidently decide what is an unacceptable age difference. There are many factors to take into consideration on a case by case basis. What is 'too far' for one couple could be perfectly fine for another.

  • I suppose when you get to 18 it doesn't matter how old your partner is. xx

  • Once you both are passed the age of consent, it really doesn't matter.

  • As long as they are both legal adults who can think for themselves, age gaps don't matter. Love is love, is it not?

  • It depends. I don't see anything wrong with an 80 y/o man being with a 60 y/o woman. But there is something wrong with a 35 year old man being with a 15 y/o girl.

It really doesn't matter what age you are as long as you are both adults and love eachother.

In ancient times, I guess that was normal but in modern times, this would be considered molestation and he'd be labeled as a pedophile.

  • Once you become an adult, it doesn't really matter in my opinion.

  • Personally, I don't believe in that "Age is just a number" bullshit, but then again, who people date and sleep with really isn't any of my business. So I'm just gonna go with what pretty much everyone else will say; as long as you're of legal age, who cares?

  • Rule of thumb: if you are the older person, the younger can be half your age plus 7.
