  • I like how you said "hey, my boyfriend is a geek" as if to say only males can fall under this genre of people.

  • My opinion, a geek excells in one subject or task, geeks are more hands-on, do more physical work. A geek might very well fail in school yet be a complete genius in some area.

A nerd is someone who tries to learn about every subject, act like know-it-alls, lack practical skills and often aren't as smart as they think they are. Tend to not have a sense of humor. Not much creativity.

  • I always see nerds as people who have marginal interests and who know far too much about it. Also people with social skills a bit lacking. Geeks, to me, are people who have skills in broader subjects, like science or computing and may have better social skills.

  • A nerd is someone who is like book smart, or a know-it-all.(i hate to admit it but i'm a nerd.) whether the nerd has social skill or not depends.
A geek is some one who IS socially awkward. you know, the guys that are way into comic books and the like.
(personally i think geeks are cute)

  • A nerd is a smart geek. A geek is just really geeky.

  • I went and looked both up from 4 different dictionary sources, noted each's etymology, and then sourced three opinion blogs!

Pop quiz: which does that make me?

  • I think geeks are the better ones and nerds might be the stereotypical ones who snort and play runescape all day.

    • Actually you know what? The terms are being tossed and thrown by media so oddly these days I don't even know anymore.

  • does it really matter?

  • I've only recently discovered that I'm not a nerd any more. I used to be nerdy about many things, and I still think of myself as a nerd, but all the things that I used to be a nerd in I'm not interested in now. This is frustrating, because now I have poor social skills *and* no deep knowledge of anything specific. Because of this I fit in poorly with almost any group, nerds or otherwise.

    • dom180 that's exactly how I feel too. I wanted to shake off the nerd image so much that I lost touch with technology & computers for a decade or so but after a realisation that it's the only thing I had going for me I'm catching up again.
