What's better? a dysfunctional democracy or a functional dictatorship?

Which of these two societies would you rather want to live in? Example of a dysfunctional democracy: India. Absolutely no order, a giant mess, but freedom.
Example of a functional dictatorship: Nazi Germany. Lots of order, but limited freedom.

Dictatorship is better in many ways but the major issue with the system is eventually you get a bad dictator. If the dictator is a good leader its better because he doesnt have so much bureaucracy to deal with and can do the things that need to be done. The major problem with democracy is everyone gets a vote. If you go down the street and ask people basic questions about politics and the world they cant answer them. But most of them still vote. These people can easily be lead by fear and emotion. But dictatorship is more dangerous because like I said, eventually you get a bad one.

Before anyone says America is a dysfunctional democracy let me remind you that America isnt a democracy it's a representative republic. The difference is that in a pure democracy popular vote reigns supreme. In a representative republic we democratically elect representatives to represent our intrest in the house and senate.
Is it inefficient? Yes. Is it dysfunctional? No.

Dysfunctional implies that it doesnt work in the intended way. Prime example of this is communist china that work on a democratic system. The president is just the only person allowed to win every election. Anyone who is threatening Xi would be dissapeared for a corruption crime. That being said China is still a functional country, vs dictatorships after the enlightenment never worked for long periods of time.

Democracies can still functions because there are lines of succession. In absolute dictatorships you have the classic caesar problem of after the leader is removed theres a power vacuum that other faction leaders try to fill for power.

Nazi germany went from an industrious empire to a pile of rubble because of its leadership. Hitler didnt make good wartime decisions and no one could overrule his decrees.

    • Nazi Germany was extremely successful and well-functioning, until they got that great idea to invade Poland.

That's a myth. Nazi Germany was corrupt and brutal, and never would've lasted, even if they'd not started the war.

It was a good idea from their point of view but hitler needed to focus Germany's people into a goal because of superiority. Much like how Roman's functioned. Problem is that kind of thinking makes war an easy decision which in hindsight was a terrible idea. Nazi germany could of kept their top scientists if they didnt alienate half of them do to the superiority complex.

I find this question interesting. It reminds me of one of the ideas of the early American feminists. They somehow got it into their heads that any government in which you cannot vote is automatically tyrannical.

  • the thing with democracy is that ANYONE can manipulate the numbers when they want. In my book that's messed up.
I wouldn't want a dictatorship either. That stuffs messed up. I would never want someone to control my life, my choices, who I love etc.

I only want a dictatorship if I get to be the dictator with supreme authority until that happens I would rather take the dysfunctional democracy.

It is the normal state for people to be ruled by someone with force. The opportunity for freedom and self rule is always the most desirable ideal, as fleeting as it is.

Fuctional dictatorships always kill humanity. Dysfunctional democracies have hope.

I say a functional dictatorship is better because at least you're not voting for the wrong man, lest there are evil plans for a democracy.

Most people are too stupid and uninterested to be able to effectively participate in their country’s political system and allowing them to do so just leads to politicians floundering around, making unachievable promises and dumbing everything down for the masses. Society works best with a strictly controlled hierarchy where everyone knows their place and does their duty.

In a functional society, everyone has a duty to each other. Individualism has got western societies into this current mess

There is no functional society. Small groups of people when left on their own just want to eat and sleep. Its only through tyranny people try to find some greater meaning to justify living.
