Glacier National Park! Really, look up the national parks and pick your favorite...I most recommend, as I've noted, Glacier...but also Big Bend, if you like deserts.
Also, if serious nature isn't what you really want out of your trip, hit up the East Coast, Washington DC has a lot of great stuff, and though the city ain't cheap, there are a lot of free things to see if you research it well, and most people around that area are used to people speaking other languages. Also, great way to get some learning (brainwashing...I kid...) on the history.
I highly recommend reading something on it yourself on the plane to get the most out of a more history or cultural experience oriented trip.
I do that kind of research, almost pre-trip contemplation, when I visit other countries, and it has never failed to serve me well.
Also! For a city trip, San Francisco, hands down.
If you have any friends in America, visit them. If you're by the boarders, Mexico and Canada are also worth visiting, same thing for Cuba, actually, which I've not-so-legally been to (go via Canada).
I've been to NY and it's beautiful. There's so much to do. I went in December and hated how cold it was, but I plan on going back in May & I'm sure it'll be nicer then. I would also like to go to LA and Hawaii. Ohio is nice, there's not much to do in my city but Columbus has a huge mall surrounded by lots of restaurants and thrift shoppes. Enjoy your trip here, wherever you go. ;)
You should go to Ohio too if you decide on the east side because they are known for their good ice creams and wines. Plus there is a beautiful area called the Hocking Hills region; they have great state parks that have caves everywhere. There is also the Great Lakes area a long with Michigan above Ohio. And Michigan has beautiful sand dunes; the sunsets while sitting on the dunes are so pretty.
California is a must visit. I'm personally all about the west coast probably cause I grew up here. I've been to Florida multiply times and dreaded each vacation, it's way too humid. Definitely visit southern California, especially San Diego! You can literally do everything in southern California. The ultimate day is to go surfing early in the morning, head to the desert to go dirt bike riding, then up to the mountains to go snowboarding. It's possible. And if you visit Arizona, go to Flagstaff.
OREGON! It is the loveliest state. I've lived here for quite awhile and have never been happier. It's got breathtaking scenery and a lot of tourist attractions. World renown snow boarding and mountain biking, tons of fun music festivals and events through out the year. Especially in Portland!
Just as a random shout out to all travelers, if there's any place I've ever come close to hating (I try to avoid hate...), it's Las Vegas. Everything about it is antithetical to the rest of America, at least the parts I love. Whatever beauty it has is of a perverted kind.
Area residents aren't horrible people...but I pity them to live in such a place.
I'm from Canada, but live in Michigan now. Although this is a beautiful State, I would like to recommend the North-West. Although I have not been to the North-West United States, I have been to beautiful British Columbia, absolutely breathtaking. I have always wanted to see the North-West states myself and hope to go there soon.
From the list provided, my vote goes to California mainly because it offers a lot in terms of tourism (Im assuming you are going there to just travel). LA (Hollywood, Beverly Hills, etc), San Francisco, Disneyland, Universal Studios, world class beaches, greatest weather in the world (imo), etc. You can also go to Las Vegas very easily and the plane tickets are usually pretty cheap.
I would also recommend NY but I've never been there so I can't comment on how great that place is. But I know everyone who went to NYC loved being there.
