My native language is Dutch. The other languages I speak are English, German and French, and I can read and understand Afrikaans (since it is very similar to dutch). I also speak some spanish.
I noticed that about Afrikaans, for me the sounds were hard to put together reading and pronouncing the sounds. All I got was "ho han det?" and it's such a different spelling. Also "donkey"! Hehe
The Dutch in general seem to speak many languages...
Yeah their spellin is very different. you know what they mean but its written in a litteral kind of way. the word for barbeque if you translate is to english literally is (to) roast meat.
HAHAHAHAH that's one of the few I remember! I mean, are we talking about braaing? My friend and I first assumed it was "no wearing bras" in the swimming pool rules...
Right now I'm not sure if it was google or going to the eastern food bazaar in cape town, or a combination of both! But we eventually figured it out! Hahahahahahaaaa
Yeah, in school we learn a lot of languages. German and French are pretty much obligated for the first three (depends per level and school) years of middle/high school. and we start to learn english in elemantary school and it is obligated all thoughout middle/highschool.
Over here in Brazil aside from Portuguese, naturally, only English is a mandatory language. I like that about your culture, makes your people more worldly! :)
