    • I wish there was a procedure to take away the desire for companionship could have helped me in my youth.

      • I think I kind get that. I have cousins who were raised in the same area as me who can speak both Spanish and English. I guess they just payed more attention to what they're parents said than I did. XD

        • I have cousins who can speak Spanish too. ;-)

I also kinda got the feeling that my Colombian mom and Anglo-American dad who are both bilingual spoke Spanish when they wanted their privacy. I was fine with that, because I felt like so much of what my parents talked about was boring. I always just had headphones in my ears, and was in my own world inside my head. I think my father wanted me to take Spanish in high school and my my mother thought it was unnecessary, because she thought she could teach me. I never really wanted to learn from my mom though, because she's bossy and annoying. At least my mom supported me in taking German in High School, whereas my dad seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about all of it. To make matters worse I had an aunt who lived halfway across the country who was a math teacher and a chaperone for field trips to Europe, and she wanted me to take French. I guess there was a bit if a push for me to learn French so I could go with my aunt and cousin to Europe. BAH!

I think when it comes to electives it's best if the child chooses which courses he or she wants to study. I do think that it probably would be good if there was perhaps a requirement for American students to learn some Spanish, but I certainly wouldn't be asking my folks to help me study like my dad seemed to hope.

I also played the flute, because my dad could play the flute, and he had two flutes. However, I really wanted to learn to play the trumpet. My mom wanted me to learn to play the drums which was probably a good idea, but I never wanted to do what she wanted me to when it came to anything. I love my mom, but we never really got along very well.

I wish more people would let children choose their fields of interest in a more organic way rather than trying to influence them.

          ... meh.
