What is your opinion about gamergate? yes, i know it's an old topic

For those who don't know Gamergate is a controversy that started when a game developer named Zoe Quinn had produced a controversial game about depression, Depression Quest. A good game if you can handle it, by the way. The gamer community turned on her when her ex-boyfriend claimed she slept with five guys during their relationship. The gamer community threatened her life and harassed her.

Then various journalists such as Leigh Alexander, and Anita Sarkeeian picked up the banner and began writing articles and blogs, and making videos condemning all gamers as hate mongers against minorities and women.

Then Intel pulled it's adds from Gamasutra the company that Leigh Alexander worked for. Intel then apologized saying something along the lines of not wanting to take sides.

But I digress. Gamergate is really about the ethics of game developers and journalists in the gaming industry. The game developers are being accused of racism and sexism. The journalists are accused of turning against the gamers and the companies producing the game and using them to push their personal agendas (mostly monetary).

Their is way more to this story. I'm not even going to try to write about it all. But I am a gamer, and as a gamer I can assure you I have been threatened and berated. Yes in real life, in one case. But I can tell you the gaming community (and the internet) is not filled with violent hate filled misogynistic racists. Some are exceedingly good people. But there are some who will do these horrid things. Your should not lay the blame on all of use because of the actions of a few.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • The whole thing is just a stupid excuse for social justice warriors to enjoy bitching about imaginary misogyny, one of their favourite pastimes.

Didn't know about it before & now you, to a degree, have enlightened me on the subject. A subject you seem to care about with a passion.

I can now honestly say, hand on heart I really, really couldn't give a fuck.

To each their own. Anita Sarkeeian dissed Clementine from the Walking Dead. No one talks bad about Clementine.

I'm still looking for the post but have yet to find it. As I recall it basically said Clementine was the typical male portrayal of women. It made her look weak and dependent on men to save her.

I loved that game and I can say I identified with Clementine more than any other character, ever.

I happen to be what is called a White Knight. I had a girlfriend once who knew if she wanted to see me cry she just needed to to talk about the contents of the pink suitcase in the Japanese movie "Nobody Knows".

I just had to blow my nose.

I had to leave the room during the scene in "What Happened to Monday" when the father had to make his girls look the same. It took twenty minutes for me to come back into the room.

But to say Clem looked weak and dependent on men to save her. I can honestly say I lost my mind when I read it. First off she was a child. So yes, adults should take care of her. Second, she later does a damn good job of taking care of herself and others. She does thing I wouldn't want to do. Play the game. If you don't love her by the end you are heartless.

I only know of what you have written here in regards to this topic. On the surface, my first thought is that someone who cheated on her man 5 times shouldn't be making a game about depression. My second thought is that it sounds like she is being made an example out of. We have to all understand that there are probably numerous people throughout the gaming universe who do or have done equally bad things.

I'm not really sure what to think. Unfortunately, these things happen in the world. An example is the publicized teenage girls who commit suicide as a result of something somewhat similar to this. To call this gamergate, in the same context of something such as pizzagate, is hard for me to understand.

Let's be honest, though. While a chunk of the gaming universe is innocent "nerds" if you will, to put it very simply, there is and has been for a long time that chunk of gamers who are extremely sexual. That's where my confusion lies. The fact is that regardless of the situation, there will probably always be these various groups of people.

This experience will probably make her a stronger person, and I think in the end a lot of us get what is fair. She put herself out there and was selling a product, all the while holding skeletons in her closet. Just like Martha Stewart, Bill Cosby, and the list goes on and on.

My thought is that it will subside in time and she will figure out who is going to be on her side in the long run. Gamers will find a new game(s) or get tired of saying the same thing over and over. I would guess her gaming career is over as far as making games and that it will go away as long as her goal isn't to be a career gaming developer.

As a guy, I understand the hatred for someone who cheats like that, but there are levels to how far something should go.

I should have been clearer. Zoe was the catalyst that started the whole thing. But it really wasn't about her. It was more about the video game journalists involved. Also about the reactions of the game companies.

This video is from Syren Cove. A gamer, cosplayer, and ex-feminist. I feel she says everything I want to say about Anita Sarkeeian. She does swear more than I would like. But it's the internet.

I don't know the ins and outs but I'll say a few thoughts I do have on it.

While there was A POINT that the feminists had about the ubiquity of female video game charaters being sexualised, I think they were making too big a deal out of it. It's also worth saying that the trend of hypersexualising women in games was already on the decline before they even started talking about it, so it was redundant at that point.

Anita Sarkeesian is very obviously not an avid gamer, and she uses very selective arguments to point toward "look how sexualised this woman is!". She has criticised any amount of feminine expression video game girls have, even if fully clothed. That makes me think she genuinely doesn't like female characters. She just wants men with tits; a woman who acts like a man, dresses like a man, talks like a man etc. I get to the point of wondering "Anita... why don't you just play... a man?"

The only thing I'll give to their side is that the rape and death threats from SOME pockets of the pro-gamer community were not appropriate. It also cheapened their side of the debate and gave more fuel for what the feminists were saying. But other than that, I'm firmly on their side. To call the gaming community "misogynist" and "racist" is so frivolous and petty. If games do lack diversity (which I don't think they do to a SEVERE level anyway) it's because game developers want their games to sell. A fat black trans butch lesbian (while there's certainly a niche for that character) will not sell in the mainstream.

    I'm gay and I love gaming, but I'm content with a relative lack of gay characters because;

    1) I can relate to characters on all sorts of levels, not just on arbitrary "identities"
    2) I know that characters are straight because most people are straight and therefore straight characters sell better. It's not "because homophobia"

I'll also add as a general point - I hate the hypocrisy of the modern "social justice!" movement, because it's espousing views of cultural Marxism, while simultaneously commodifying feminism and victimhood narratives as a capitalist cash grab.

In this case, Anita Sarkeesian and others have got very rich off the back of this... while claiming to be "activists". Wallowing in victimhood has become a business model to these people and it's sick.

Right. The thing is most gamers don't care. Even the female gamers I have asked don't care. Now if you can't make the jumps on the Destiny 2 raid, that's a whole different thing.

Have you played Life is Strange? You might like it.
