  • The Myers Briggs system is the most well-respected method for categorizing personality types. However (and that's a big however), most laypeople don't know how to take the test for accurate results; they take it based on their current circumstance and feelings rather than on their core nature and temperament. Not only that, most don't realize that the typing is based on a "spectrum" with a lot of variation within each category and type. The percentages mean something. Carl Jung (another well respected psychologist) further elaborated on the MBTI, putting forth that each category can either be an 'extroverted' or 'introverted' trait; meaning, the characteristics of the trait can either be applied outwardly towards others, or inwardly and internalized towards the self.

    Some people take it too seriously too and live by it like a rule, which is taking it too far. It is strictly a guideline for understanding the personality of one's self as compared with others. Some say that it's nothing more than another form of astrology, but that is nonsense and they probably don't know any of the research that when into creating it.

    For myself, over the past ten years, I have continuously typed as an INTP.
    IN(i)T(i)P(e)
    Introversion=62% / Extraversion=38%
    Intuition=89% / Sensing=11%
    Thinking=58% / Feeling=42%
    Perceiving=74% / Judging=24%

    • True. As a psychology student, I can tell you that many people in the field see it as only somewhat better than horoscopes, while some view it as useful but overused. Then there's always the Forer Effect.
