  • I picked Sign Language. Well I know American Sign Language I should say. I just find the language very interesting and I had taken a couple classes in the past and the stories with it are intersting also. We were required to stay the night at a Deaf school too. And never say they are deaf, they are Deaf and they don't have disabilities they just can't hear.

I need to practice it and re-teach myself some signs I've forgotten over the years. How they sign is pretty cool too; where they put their verbs, nouns and subjects in the sentences.

    • As with most languages, the first thing I learnt in sign were the swear words. :¬)

      • When I was little a deaf guy was trying to show me "I love you" in sign -which I knew already- and I thought he was trying to say he loved me. I freaked.

    • I need to spend some time learning British Sign Language. I learnt a little several years ago and I enjoyed it. There is something fun about being able to express words and sentences through body language alone - like a more coherent, structured form of charades :) It's a shame there would be so few opportunities for me to practice it with someone.

      • Yes I have to agree.

Something about it I just love it. I remember after I had taken the classes it took a little while before I had stopped signing while I would talk to people. lol.

But you can always just check online websites if you want to learn more. Although a lot of times they have different signs for certain words but still they have some really good websites that have tests and quizzes too. But there should always be a time to practice it with someone too. :) Others need to find it more interesting too.

  • I couldn't really choose a 'favorite' because I haven't spoken any other besides English.

But the ones that seem pretty cool to me are Italian and German.

  • Afrikaans is awsome^^ i like it because it origenates from 17th century Duch but it's mixed with Portuguese,French,English, Malay, and many native african languages. if you speak only english it may be a bit difficult to understand some one speking it but you can quite easily understand written Afrikaans. thats why i like it, it's a language that any indoeuropean speaking person can easily learn. btw I can speak english, italian fluently then I can speak a bit of spanish, japanese and Afrikaans.

  • I love languages and honestly find it too difficult to opt for one of them alone. I like the idea of a pacific Tower of Babel, where you hear so many different sounds, melodies, structures, but *have to* communicate - as frustrating as it may be, it's such fun to try and do it in a language you've just been introduced to!

T'es pas quebecois si tu ne dit pas: "Esti, criss, caliss ou tabarnak!" :P (Meme le monde qui parle anglais le disent, haha)

    • English grammar is only easy if you've grown up with it. It's really full of contradictions and erroneous rules.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Umm, I didn't grow up with it. I'm Belgian.

the only languages I know are English, Dutch, French, German, Latin and Italian. Judging by the ones I know, I think The English language has the easiest grammar by far.

There are probably some easier languages out there (such as Esperanto), but from this list, English is definitely my first choice. Furthermore, there are little languages with such a wide vocabulary.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I only speak English :(. The opportunity to learn other languages here sucks! I will learn Spanish though, I am determined!

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I love Japanese and English, if only because I speak them. Otherwise, Portuguese, Russian, French, and Arabic are all beautiful among others.

It's just Dutch that sounds terrible, really. Sounds like a guy drowning.

  • German sounds amazing.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • It's either French or Spanish for me. French sounds very cultured, and Spanish is sultry. I once took the long route home because I was walking behind two Spanish women talking and I was just enjoying the sound of it.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Latin because it the root for so many languages. including five of the languages mentioned on your list. And its the ground language used for most areas of science. historically Latin was the language used by many great worries such as the roman's and Greek, during the B.C's it was commonly used to communicate through different empires and through out Europe and the middle east. And in my opinion most people with Latin roots are sexy ;)

    • As a generalisation it is, but I get your point - it's more of a family of dialects. I wasn't going to list all the dialects so I simplified. But just for your benefit, I put Mandarin in brackets :)

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Technically, isn't every language a family of dialects?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • The major ones are pretty similar but the nation uses over 100 different languages, none of them called Chinese.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
        • Yes many are, but some people argue that Chinese dialects can be so diverse that they constitute a language themselves rather than a variation. So I changed it from Chinese to Chinese (Mandarin), the biggest Chinese dialect, to make Parrish happy :P
