What is up with people all of a sudden identifying as another nationality?

So all over youtube, instagram tiktok now are people saying they're a different nationality than they actually are.

This one girl is American has a clear American accent and says she's british because she was born there to American parents but she was only there a few weeks.

This white guy is saying he's Japanese because he was born in Japan and lived there only as a baby..his entire family are white american and he like full on said "stop asian hate, as an Asian myself you guys need to stop discriminating against us"..

Bro you're white..

Even a girl born in India is identifying as asian when she's white and her parents were on holiday there when they had her.. like what. Are they confusing citizenship and nationality or what is going on?

My brother was born in Ireland lol but we're American he never identifies as irish lol

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I identify as a patient because I was born in the hospital.

You better hope that you don't get a bill from that hospital after all this time. It would be a doozie.

Seems a lot of Americans claim to be Irish or Italian, though. What they mean is that their lineage is Irish or Italian from a few generations back or whatever. It's really weird.

I mean you can live in America and still be Irish. Also if they live in mostly irish city and have family from Ireland and have irish traditions and culture. Why would you consider them not Irish? Of course they identity as that.

No. If they're not from Ireland, no.

You going to tell that to the Mexicans in LA who only speak Spanish. Who have half thier family or grandparents from Mexico and listen to Mexican music and celebrate Mexican Holiday that they can not be Mexican becuase you thought you had the right to take their heritage away from them?

I think it's because the US is relatively young and such a mixed bag. Still definitely the loudest though.

Yep. You, too, are babies, even more so. It explains a lot of the loudness about origination in some places, but the US is especially bad.

Because its not cool to be white right now. Being colored in any way gives you some sort of credibility when you're younger.

Cultural void? Lots of other countries are homogenous and have shared blood, culture, and religion, Japan being an example of this, so I can see why kids would want to feel like they belong somewhere.

People degrade themselves, that's why they can't ever love themselves for who they are.

I think it's important that we stop denouncing ourselves.

Nationality is the country of which you are a legal citizen of. Which is automatically given to those born in many countries. You may find it annoying when people say their nationality is a country their parents don’t identify as citizens of or they never grew up in that country, but those people weren’t wrong.

    See, your problem here...

And I see this on this website a lot, btw, way too much...

Your problem here, is that you're fucking confusing TWITTER and TIKTOK and GIMPSTIGRAM with real life. Because no one in real life does this shit. I've met like one old pakasati guy that claimed to be australian, and that's about it.

So, this transnationalism trend, not happening in places that are real life and not youtube. I suggest you go outside and focus on things that are an actual worry, like polar bears drinking too much coca cola. They're gonna get the beetus

Gimpstagram! I’m stealing that one. I hate that stupid website with a burning passion, it’s the all the narcissism of social media with none of the drama. Just a self-esteem black hole of lies and advertising that my generation seems to feel obligated to gormlessly scroll through for 15-60 minutes a day.

It’s a fitting name too, sadly it seems to have been deleted from YouTube but Other People’s Lives did an interview with a male influencer who was secretly a sex worker to afford his lavish lifestyle, as were many of his Instagram peers. Not that all sex workers are gimps of course but everyone who thinks Instagram is reality certainly is.

Remember that bot programmers, media platform data miners, and cyperspace echo chamber delusionists of all types get paid to make real life look like Donald Trump's magic Mirror-On-The-Wall. Sadly, Ms CD is confirming that real life just isn't fun anymore.

Actually, the sad fact she raises is why I hang out here. BONUS. In cyberspace, nobody has to worry about other people's bad breath.

It's a line from the kids story Snow White.

Queen Grimhilde. "Mirror mirror on the walls who is fairest of them all?"

Magic Mirror. "Over the seven jeweled hills, beyond the seventh wall, in the cottage of the seven dwarfs, dwells Snow White, fairest one of all.”

Of course, Donald Trump is the new Queen Grimhilde. The drama continues ...

People are stupid bro. Now if you grow up in that country then yea id say it's fair to say that but if not than not really. But let them embarrass themselves who cares. I used tobhang with a white Mexican. Dude was a white guy right but he was adopted by a Mexican family when he was a child. So yea fucking white Mexican. Threw me off when I found out.

I actually have dual nationality but I identify more as one than the other because I have no loyalty to that other despite living there for 54 years.

I thought your examples were gonna be about idiots who have never even been to a certain country identifying as being that nationality. I think these people are correct though, if you were born in eg. India, then you're Indian. It's the only good strict method for defining nationality.

Sure we could say whichever country you feel is your homeland is your nationality, but then you get these idiots who claim to be a certain nationality when they've only lived in that country for a few weeks (even a few years isn't really enough), or without even ever visiting that country at all.

Or we could say whichever country you grew up in is your nationality, but people often move around a lot when they're young, so it'd be difficult to figure out which country is their true nationality then. If the decision was put to them, then they'd just choose whichever country seems the coolest.

So yeah, I think where you're born should be the only deciding factor in nationality. If you were born in India on holiday but then grew up in America, then for convenience's sake when meeting a new person, you could just claim to be American, just so you don't have to bother explaining the whole story. But otherwise I'd say that person is Indian tbh.

  • It is because white people have been so demonized by society, they want some way out of being called white.
