I would say that an overall average in the 80's (or almost there) says that you have given your effort and you know an acceptable amount to be considered competent in what was taught overall.
Having said that, some people dont do well with certain subjects, and some teachers just well....... aren't the best.
I sucked at math, but I did well with Biology so I got 90% average in biology and a 68% average math - my parents thought that was acceptable. I think it's fine so long as you excell in something - everyone is different.
