What happens

What happens if you leave a perfect egg for years? Does it start to smell or not?

I just found some the other day that had been sitting in a vehicle for a few years. They were slightly cracked, as if they had pressure build up inside, but not fully burst open. They still had some weight to them, so not much escaped through the cracks I guess.

These were small eggs from some wild-ish banty hens I had, they laid them inside an old truck engine compartment. They were not fertilized since I had no roosters.

I did not break any open, but I could go check if they're still there tomorrow and bust one open I guess.

        Ok, I did it.

I set the egg on the ground and tapped it with a stick but the shell was fairly tough so I grabbed a piece of a 2x4 that was laying there and I gave it a good whack. The contents were revealed...seemingly the entire yolk remained, although dry and in an irregular glob shape now. It was a lovely sunshine yellow-orange color, and the entire interior of the shell had taken on a similar hue. The smell was slow to rise to my nostrils but when it finally arrived, I thought it must be what John Wayne Gacy's crawlspace smelled like. An ungodly scent of death and wet dog! Whoever said rotten eggs smell like Sulphur is full of shit. The smell was so heavy and strong, it attached itself to me. It was as if the egg had stowed away in my top pocket. I went back inside and immediately took a shower.

Uh, I think the egg would break down eventually and go rotten.

Not sure how long it would take for the shell to decay, but if you broke it open it would smell like... rotten eggs. Go figure.
