Frankly, the idea of marriage having anything to do with the government baffles me.
I have nothing against people wanting to have the ceremony for religious/traditional reasons, but involving the government in a relationship is just a waste and a liability. Unless you're a gold digger.
Marriage was concocted to control polygamy hundreds of years ago now, society mostly does that, and like so much of the law, marriage is a remnant of a bygone era.
So, to answer the question, yes - but only if we absolutely have to have government-controlled marriage in the first place.

Yeah, I guess so. But that's only the case because marriage exists in the law in the first place.
