People are just another form of energy. Always taking the path of least resistance. When someone dies (which, ya know, happens a lot in that show) do you really think they want to dig a 6-foot grave? No, they feed 'em to the fat guy.
6 feet is the minimum distance you can bury someone where the scent won't attract animals to come dig them up, and of course there are animals on the island. Come to think of it, I think I actually learned that fact from Lost... >_O
